The town of Visegrád is located along road 11, and is 43 km far from Budapest in the north. In the area of Visegrád the earliest traces of human life and appearance can be dated back to the Neolithic Age, and based on evidences this area has been continuously inhabited since the end of the Bronze Age. The first Latin language deed mentions the castle and the shire of Visegrád in 1009, and in 1323 it was made the centre of the country.
Visegrád lived its glory for the second time during the reign of King Mátyás who got marvellous buildings erected in the castle. The Citadel is the most known part of the system of fortifications of Visegrád (aquatic castle, lower castle, upper castle), since the building standing at the top of the Castle Hill can be seen from far from every direction, and it is the most common destination of tours and excursions heading for Visegrád.
In the Citadel we are going to gain insight into the history of the castle, see the exhibitions, and those who feel like may even try archery. Taking a look around and in the castle takes about 1,5 hours. After the visit in the castle we are going down to the foot of the hill and have lunch in the Renaissance Restaurant, which serves delicious and mouth-watering food and drink in clay pots, taking the guests back to the correspondent era.
After the pleasant lunch we say goodbye to Visegrád and return to Budapest.
